Franklin board to vote on library levy

FRANKLIN — A levy to support library services may Monday night move one step closer to appearing on the November ballot.

The Franklin Board of Education must give technical approval 1-mill, five-year levy sought by the Franklin-Springboro Public Library.

Library Director Anita Carroll recently told the school board they must vote on the levy to come before voters became they were an original sponsor of the library when it opened.

As libraries across the state struggle under funding cuts recently approved in the two-year start budget, the Franklin-Springboro Library board voted July 16 to pursue a levy expected to raise $1.3 million.

The library has already made efforts to reduce expenses. In April, four full-time positions were eliminated and part-time hours were cut.

The library also used Columbus Day and Veterans Day as unpaid furlough days.

The Franklin school board is expected to vote on allowing the levy at its meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, July 27, at the board office in Hampton Bennett on Sixth Street. The school board votes on other library business, like approving members of library board.

Officials said cuts in state funding, which covers about 95 percent of the library’s budget, forced layoffs and other steps to avoid a budget deficit in 2009.

Last week, Carroll said the libraries are about to announce cuts in hours of operation.

Also in Warren County, both the Lebanon Public Library and the Mary L. Cook Library in Waynesville will file paperwork with the board of elections to get a 1-mill levy on the November ballot.
