Gas leak forces school to evacuate

Classes will be in session Thursday following a gas line rupture this afternoon that forced the evacuation of a school.

Construction workers were building a playground at Camden Primary School when a worker struck the gas line at 2:09 p.m., according to the Camden Fire Department.

Children were evacuated from the Bloomfield Street school to a Baptist church about a block away. Parents picking up their children had to sign them out at the church. The gas leak also forced the evacuation of all buildings within an eighth of a mile of the school, fire officials said.

Vectren responded to turn off the gas service so repairs can be made. A vapor curtain was placed over the area. The leak was contained by 5 p.m.

The school, which is in the Preble-Shawnee Local School District, will be vented and is expected to be open as usual on Thursday, school officials said.
