The facility will relocate from its Centerville location, which is about a mile north on the same street. It is at 9755 Dayton-Lebanon Pike, between Sheehan and Nutt roads.
The Goddard School is a franchised preschool and child care facility, with its headquarters in King of Prussia, Pa. It serves ages 6 weeks to 12 years. There are more than 360 franchised schools in 37 states, with three in the Dayton area.
Angela and Kevin Norman have owned this school for nearly 10 years. They leased the former site and will own the new school site.
Donald Kiley is president of K&A Architects, which designed the new school. Jeff Samuelson of JZ Construction is the builder.
Kiley said this design is a slight deviation from the prototype of other Goddard Schools, which often have a Colonial look.
Angela Norman said she wanted the new building to look like a more traditional schoolhouse, complete with bronze bell and cupola tower.
“The bell will ring from the inside,” Norman said, “so it can be heard by the students at the beginning and end of school. It will be enclosed within the structure.”
Kiley said Tuesday morning that the project was under way.
“We already started hauling dirt,” he said, adding that they hope to have the school finished by January. “It will be a quick four-month process.”
The development also will include a private road to be built alongside the school, which will be directly across from the driveway of Centerville Community Church, 10688 Dayton-Lebanon Pike.
The road will end in a cul-de-sac for now, but will be built to public street standards and could eventually be continued to accommodate future developments, Kiley said.
There will be a sidewalk in front of the school and on the north and south sides of the proposed street, and a buffer of trees to the south of the school, where the project abuts land zoned for residential use.
The school also will have 6-foot fencing around the school to enclose the playground.
