Golf Channel champion to donate part of winnings to alma mater

MIDDLETOWN — Carling Coffing has an opportunity to give back, and she’s taking advantage of it.

The 2004 Middletown High School graduate was recently crowned The Golf Channel’s Big Break Sandals Resorts champion, and among her prizes was a $10,000 shopping spree at Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Coffing will donate $2,000 of that to the MHS Athletic Department at the Middletown City School’s board of education meeting tonight, Oct. 4.

“Once a Middie, always a Middie,” Coffing said on Friday as she prepared to board an airplane to return home from Florida. “Middletown has been supporting me ever since I was a little girl. I’m happy to help in any way.”

Coffing will also be honored by receiving the key to the city at Tuesday night’s Middletown City Council meeting.

“I’m really excited,” Coffing said. “Everywhere I go, I’m proud to say I’m from Middletown, Ohio, so for them to honor me this way feels great.”

Coffing has been busy since winning the Big Break. She recently competed on the golf course against WLW radio personality Bill Cunningham and raised $3,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, a charity near and dear to Coffing’s heart. She was diagnosed with Type I diabetes when she was 5 years old.

On Wednesday, Coffing will head west to Danville, Calif., to prepare for the CVS Pharmacy LPGA Classic. It will be her first LPGA event.

“I’ve been wanting this since I was 4 years old,” Coffing said. “I’m really looking forward to it.”
