Goodwill plans to open a second store in Huber Heights, expanding its presence by adding a retail location in the northern portion of the city.
The company intends to build a new 15,000-square-foot standalone store at 7590 Brandt Pike on a 3.7-acre parcel in front of Walmart near the Interstate 70 interchange.
The cost of the project — which is expected to begin by the end of the summer — is about $2 million and the new store will create an estimated 24 new jobs, according to Huber Heights assistant city manager Scott Falkowski.
“They provide a good outreach for the community,” Falkowski said. “They’re good partners with the city and with the community. This is definitely something the area will enjoy and use.”
The new store is projected to open in the first quarter of 2016, said Kim Bramlage, marketing communications coordinator for Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley.
She said the new store will follow the company’s mission “to empower people with disabilities and other needs to achieve independence and enhance their lives.”
Approximately 60 percent of the people hired by Goodwill to work in the retail locations have disabilities, Bramlage said.
Goodwill is scheduled to make a pre-application presentation at the May 12 Planning Commission meeting, Falkowski said. A detailed development plan will go before the planning commission in June or July, he said.
Bramlage said it is still early in the process, but the company has a non-binding letter of intent to purchase the property.
Goodwill has an existing store in Huber Heights south of town at 5058 Brandt Pike. Bramlage said the new location will not replace the current store.
“We currently don’t have a presence in the northern area of Huber Heights and we like the location near Walmart,” Bramlage said.
Goodwill has more than 25 stores and donation centers in the Dayton area, according to its website.
While the new Goodwill will be built on the last vacant outlot in front of Walmart, Falkowski said the city has not heard anything regarding the former Fifth Third Bank that has sat empty in that same area for the last several months.
