City to unveil new bike racks

Xenia will reveal newly designed bicycle racks in the city’s historic downtown area on March 22.

Xenia, a international bike destination located at the intersection of four popular bike trails representing the nation’s largest paved trail networks, worked with the Greene County Career Center and Twist, Inc., to design 12 new bike racks that will allow cyclists to secure their bicycles as they either visit, work, shop or live.

The city’s planning and zoning department recruited GCCC welding instructor Mike Thompson and his students to design and fabricate the ornamental bicycle racks, according to Lee Warren, a city spokesman

The unique partnership signals the city’s recognition of the important economic development impact of cyclists on the local economy, as well as the potential of public-private partnerships to implement community improvements in a way that reduces taxpayer cost and provides an educational opportunity for local students, Warren said.

The public unveiling will start at 10:30 a.m. in front of Toward Independence Inc. located at 81 East Main Street in Xenia.
