History teacher earns special recertification

XENIA — Xenia High School history teacher Pat Marrinan has been awarded a 10-year National Board Certification renewal from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.

Marrinan is among only 2 percent of educators nationwide achieving national board certification. Similar to board-certified physicians and accountants, teachers who achieve National Board Certification meet rigorous standards through intensive study, expert evaluation, self-assessment and peer reviews.

Marrinan was first certified in 2000 with his current recertification valid from 2010-20.

He has spent the last 28 years as a teacher with the past 23 years with Xenia Community Schools. Marrinan has served as a soccer coach for 26 years and has served as a department chairman. He helped establish the AP program and serves as an AP grader.

Since his initial certification, he has helped mentor teachers and National Board candidates. Marrinan currently teaches AP U.S. history and manages the Teaching American History Grant for Greene County schools.

He received his undergraduate degree in history/education (summa cum laude) and graduate degree in theology from the University of Dayton.
