“No one has come forward,” said Lt. Doug Eck of the Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, of the driver of the 2005 White Dodge Magnum that struck the 1990 Chevrolet Van carrying Caldwell.
When troopers arrived to the accident, they found the Magnum abandoned.
Crash investigators believe that the Magnum was traveling south at high speed on Philadelphia Drive when it struck the rear of the van, causing it to catch on fire. Witnesses told police the Magnum possibly ran a red traffic light, but that had not been confirmed as of Wednesday morning.
Caldwell was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:35 a.m.
The gender of the Magnum driver is unknown. Crash investigators have determined that the Dodge is registered to a Dayton woman who lives in the 4900 block of Woodman Drive. The woman reported the car stolen, but Eck did not know when the report was made.
“We have no reason to believe that she was driving (during the time of the accident),” Eck said.
Anyone with information about the collision or the whereabouts of the Magnum’s driver should contact the Dayton Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol at 832-4794.
