HUBER HEIGHTS — Customers at the Bob Evans Restaurant in Huber Heights may not know it, but they are eating in an award-winning restaurant.
The restaurant was recently ranked No. 1 among all 571 chain members, thanks to the staff of 65 at the eatery located at 7670 Brandt Pike.
“Everyone at the restaurant contributed to this distinguished honor,” said general manager Jeff Spang of Beavercreek. “We are fortunate to have an excellent crew that made the accomplishment possible. It is definitely a teamwork effort.”
According to the restaurant’s food quality manager, Tom Heil of Huber Heights, each of the employes received a $100 bonus from headquarters in Columbus. The top rating was based on sales growth, annual profits, low turnover (in employment) and guest satisfaction.
Asked if the working crew was aware of the restaurant competition, Heil said “I don’t think they were all aware it, but when they found out in March or April that our restaurant was ranked high and had a shot at the honor, they buckled down.”
Completing the management staff at the restaurant is shift manager Jennifer Pequignet of New Carlisle.
Mary and Anna Secor, former Wayne High School tennis stars who will enter their junior year at Ohio State in September are part of the staff. The Secor twins are the daughters of David and Jenny Secor of Huber Heights.
The identical twins played basketball in their freshman and sophomore years but then decided to concentrate on tennis. Mary is majoring in health management and Anna’s major is business.
“They are both hard workers, but I like to keep them on different shifts,” Heil said. “It caused too much confusion with patrons and co-workers when they worked together. We have name badges, but at a quick glance, it was tough to tell them apart ... same height, mannerisms and personality and both polite.”
Heil said a majority of the youthful crew are either Wayne or Tecumseh High School grads.
Also among the Bob Evans crew were two other Wayne doubles tennis players, Greg Coldin and Jerry Fichtenbaum, who graduated this year and will be freshmen at Ohio State.
“We had a big day at the restaurant to observe the honor and Steve Davis, the CEO of Bob Evans in Columbus, came here to hand out the checks and plaques,” said Spang, who formerly managed a Miamisburg Bob Evans.
A lead grill cook appropriately named Evan Burgher, said, “all the hustle and hard work paid off.”
