While some cities, including Dayton, are scaling back their leaf collection efforts due to budget constraints, both Kettering and Oakwood say their programs will proceed as normal. Both cities say leaves for pickup should not be bagged, and cannot be mixed with grass clippings, branches or brush.
Kettering leaf plan
Kettering begins leaf pickup Oct. 25, and city spokeswoman Amy Berlean said crews will continue until three full passes through the city have been completed.
The city is divided into 11 zones for leaf pickup, and residents can call the city hot line at 296-FALL to learn when crews will be in their zone. Unlike Oakwood, residents are asked to rake leaves as close to the curb as possible, but not in the street.
Kettering takes its collected leaves to the city’s Leaf Composting Center on Spaulding Road, where they will be converted to leaf mulch.
Oakwood leaf plan
Oakwood begins leaf pickup Oct. 18, and city engineer Kevin Weaver said he expects crews to cover the city with at least five rounds of leaf pickup, stretching into December.
While pickup dates may vary a bit due to weather, in general, city crews will hit a neighborhood once every two weeks, handling the area east of Far Hills one week, and the west side of Far Hills the next week. Residents can rake leaves directly into the street gutter and are asked to do so one or two days before their scheduled pickup. Residents should not park on the street on collection days so the vacuum trucks and loaders can get easier access to the street.
