Kettering plans spring leaf pickup

Kettering city crews will do a one-time spring leaf pickup starting Monday, April 18. Only leaves — no branches, brush or other material — will be collected, and crews will do only one trip through the city that week.

Many residents struggled to get leaves raked to the curb last fall due to cold weather and several small snowfalls. The city’s leaf pickup efforts also were delayed by snow, pushing that work into early 2011.

As with traditional fall leaf pickup, city crews will go in order of leaf district, starting at the northeast corner of the city and working south, then finally west. Weather and volume of leaves will determine how long the pickup takes.

Residents are asked to rake leaves as close to the curb as possible without putting them in the street, and are not to put the leaves in bags.

The leaves that the city collects are turned into mulch, which is then offered free to Kettering residents. The mulch pickup site is behind Tannenberg Kennels, 2625 E. Stroop Road. The pile is replenished every Thursday, and residents should be prepared to show proof of Kettering residency.

Anyone who misses this one-time pickup, or has branches or brush to dispose of, can take it to the city’s drop-off center at 1840 Woodman Center Drive. That facility is open from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Grass clippings are not accepted.

Both yard waste and grass clippings can also be put out for collection with weekly trash if they are in special Waste Management bags, which can be purchased for $3 each at the drop-off center. For more information about leaf pickup, call the city at (937) 296-2472.
