Late Darke County prosecuting attorney rememberd

GREENVILLE – Richard M. Howell, Darke County prosecuting attorney for the past decade, was remembered Monday, Sept. 14, by county Common Pleas Court Judge Jonathan Hein as “quiet and intellectual.”

Howell, 56, of Greenville, died Friday, Sept. 11, at his residence following a battle with cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 15, at the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home, Greenville. Following tradition, the county bar association will hold a memorial service for Howell at the county courthouse before the services.

Hein said Howell was in the prosecutor’s office when he arrived in 1985. The two worked together for several years, with Howell “always the detail guy,” Hein said.

“His professionalism is a good example for what young lawyers ought to be,” the judge said.

Kelly Ormsby III worked with Howell as assistant prosecutor for 13 years.

“He was a great guy, a terrific hard worker. We are going to miss him not just as a prosecutor and the boss of the office, but as a friend,” Ormsby said.

Among survivors are Howell’s parents, Richard and Maxine Howell of West Milton; his wife, Susan Howell; a son, Clinton Howell of Cincinnati; and a daughter, Whitney Howell of Greenville.

Contributions may be made to the Cancer Association of Darke County.
