Local karate team earns medals at competition

WEST CHESTER TWP. — Karate competitors from the Buckner Martial Arts White Tigers Competition Team in West Chester Twp. recently traveled to Greenville, S.C. for the USA National Karate-Do Federation’s National Championship. From the local team, 20 people earned medals.

The USA National Karate-Do Federation is the governing body for sport karate for the U.S. Olympic Committee and fields official teams for international competition, according to a news release.

The competitors each qualified for Nationals by excelling in qualifying tournaments here in the Midwest, and have been training for nationals for months. They competed in Kumite (sparring), Kata (forms), and Kobudo (short and long weapons). Over 1,600 athletes competed in over 5,000 matches at the National Championship, held July 8-11, according to a news release.
