Nevius’ retirement was announced to Gov. John Kasich on Sept. 25. Stephen Nevius, a local attorney, submitted the letter to Kasich on his father’s behalf.

“Due to ongoing health concerns, I have decided to retire from my position as Municipal Court Judge, effective Oct. 1st, 2018,” the judge said in a letter to the state. “It has been my honor to serve the Springfield and Clark County community in this capacity since 1981.”

According to information from the Ohio Secretary of State’s Office and the Ohio Supreme Court, Ohio’s governor will make an appointment to fill the vacant seat.
There will be a special election next year to determine who will fill the seat for the remainder of this term. Voters elect municipal court judges in odd-numbered years.
Stephen Nevius declined to provide further details, but said it was the right time for his father to step down after a long career in Clark County.

“He just generally enjoyed it, and it kept him tied to the community as much as he could be,” his son said.
The resignation has been planned for some time, but the judge wanted to take the time to set a date for retirement and make sure everything was in order before officially submitting the letter, Stephen Nevius said.

Clark County Municipal Court Judge Thomas Trempe said Judge Nevius served the court well during his career.
“He cared very deeply about seeing justice was done,” Trempe said.
Eugene Nevius grew up in Clark County and graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1965. He attended Xavier University and received his law degree from Ohio Northern University.

In a voter’s guide before the 2015 election, Judge Nevius said he was proud of serving residents in a professional manner.
“Through many difficult and challenging times, we have been able to operate in a fair and efficient manner serving the citizens of Clark County well,” he said. “We weren’t always housed in adequate quarters or funded appropriately for our assigned tasks, but we always managed to perform in a professional capacity. Since we have been able to improve our surroundings and upgrade our staffing, we have become one of the best Municipal Courts in the State of Ohio.”
Trempe said it’s unfortunate Judge Nevius will be unable to complete what would have been his final term in office.
“He has served the Clark County Municipal Court with distinction for more than 30 years. He served in leadership roles for the association of the municipal and county court judges,” Trempe said. “His reach extended beyond Clark County. He will certainly be missed.”
