Man identified in Preble Co. fatal crash

Officers said Samuel J. Hammond, 50, of New Paris, died after crashing his vehicle on Georgetown Verona Road on Thursday night.

Sgt. Steve Duteil, with the Ohio Highway Patrol post in Dayton, said that according to a preliminary investigation, the car may have been traveling in excess of 80 mph when the crash occurred in the 1300 block of Georgetown Verona Road, about a mile east of Ohio 127.

The 2007 Hyundai Tiburon went off the right side of the road, over-corrected and crossed the center line before speeding off the left side of the road, Duteil said.  The vehicle went down an embankment and nose-dived on a 20-foot drop into a creek bed.

The car then rolled several times before coming to rest on its top, with the man pinned beneath the wreckage, Duteil said.

Careflight was dispatched, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the Preble County coroner, Duteil said.

An eyewitness told News Center 7 and whiotv.com the small compact car was upside down in a ditch near a culvert, and as many as 18 rescue personnel were trying to get the victim out of the wreckage.
