OXFORD, Ohio – Thousands of Miami University students rallied against members of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas. Church members protested, as they often do, against homosexuality.  They stood near the Shriver Center on Spring Street, holding signs that stated "Don't Pray for the USA" and making anti-gay speeches.

The Miami protest came about after a visit to the campus for a comparative religious class was cancelled.  The class was researching extreme religious views.

Students and colleagues were concerned about the views of the church. It often protests at military funerals to express its hatred of homosexuality.

Students wore white shirts in an effort to “white out hate.” Freedom Riders, the motorcycle enthusiasts, were also there. The Freedom Riders often show up at the funerals of soldiers to protect the families from the church members.

Miami police officers escorted the church members to the van after about a half hour. They say there were no violent conflicts or problems.

The Westboro Baptist group also protested at Oak Hills High School near Cincinnati.
