Last month, Beavercreek voted to ban medical marijuana. The Miamisburg ordinance is largely based off of the one passed by Beavercreek.
Tuesday night’s vote by Miamisburg council members does not legalize marijuana, but regulates the sale of it within city limits. For 180 days, no permits will be issued for a marijuana-based business until state legislators decide what the rules are for distributing marijuana in Ohio.
Miamisburg City Planner, Ryan Homsi, says little is understood on the standards of selling marijuana in the state and the city’s action is a cautionary move.
“It’s really a matter of what those state rules are, we don’t know for sure if it’s going to, I don’t think it will hurt any businesses, whether it helps them it just depends on what those standards are.”
The moratorium is only for new permits. Existing pharmacies, once they meet the to-be-determined state guidelines, will not fall under the moratorium.
