Middletown man hopes to be Hollywood’s ‘Top Voice’

MIDDLETOWN — A Middletown resident is one of 16 Tri-State vocalists who have made it into the third round of Hollywood Casino’s Top Voice competition, which continues Friday night.

Rich Monroe is the band leader of Sounds Unlimited - a group that has played around the city of Middletown, including at the Charity Ball and Middfest - and hopes he’ll advance to the fourth round of the casino’s singing competition where a performing contract is on the line.

“Everybody in it is really good,” said Monroe. “Every contestant really has strong abilities on stage, and that’s what makes it fun. It’s a bunch of equals putting on a show every week.”

Monroe said his style of music is classic rock’n’roll and classic rhythm and blues.

Performers sing before a panel of judges each Friday night at Hollywood Casino, and are judged based on their ability and overall performance.

The number of performers is reduced by two after each round. The competition started with 20, and after Friday night only 14 will move on to the fourth round.

Up for grabs are cash prizes for the top four contestants and the People’s Choice selection, for which voting is from March 30 to April 20 online at www.hollywoodindiana.com. Performance contracts will be awarded to the first-place and the People’s Choice winners. Monroe feels he has a good shot of winning, or at least advancing far into the competition.

“I’m a singer and musician and I really enjoy performing,” said Monroe, who has been with Sounds Unlimited since 1974.

Through week eight of the competition, it will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at Boogie Nights. The final two weeks of the competition, which will be April 20 and 27, it will be held from 8 to 9:30 p.m. at Hollywood On The Roof.

“I’m excited to be included,” he said.
