“It’s important that we celebrate the heritage of all those who came before us,” Middletown Superintendent Greg Rasmussen said. “The sacrifices people have made, the lessons that we’ve all learned from history — it’s all extremely important to take the time to reflect where we’ve been and the things we’ve all learned from those experiences.”
Among the activities scheduled in the district’s buildings are:
• Amanda Elementary: The Kroger location on Oxford State Road will display students’ work in the lobby to coincide with the store’s Black History Month celebration and contest.
• Creekview Elementary: First-graders are doing biographies; second-graders are learning about the life of Martin Luther King Jr.; third-graders are writing book reports; fourth-graders are doing informational reports; and fifth-graders are making presentations, while others will turn in projects on Friday to be displayed in the school’s lobby.
• Highview Sixth Grade Center: Daily morning announcements; student artwork will be displayed at the Middletown Public Library; and classroom readings.
• Mayfield Elementary: Daily trivia question.
• Miller Ridge Elementary: Fourth- and fifth-graders are creating PowerPoint lessons; fifth-grade students will study about government and citizen rights; and art and music classes will create illustrations and learn songs by black Americans.
• Rosa Parks Elementary: Daily trivia question.
• Wildwood Elementary: Music will be played as students enter the building; students will participate in a living museum, where they will research famous black Americans and dress up like them; art contest (K-2); essay contest (3-5); soul-food staff luncheon; and music activities.
