Middletown woman made hats for hospital patients

MIDDLETOWN — Dorothy Cox touched many lives in the past five years of her life.

The 82-year-old Middletown resident, who passed away on Tuesday, crocheted more than 2,600 baby hats for Atrium Medical Center, according to her daughter Charma Lockard.

“I knew a lady who used to do that,” Lockard said. “And she loved to crochet, so I told her the hospital needed someone to do that.”

Cox made hats that were white, pink and blue, and even made some white ones with green and red trim at Christmas time, Lockard said.

“Sometimes the hospital would call and ask her to make some hats for chemotherapy patients too,” Lockard said. “I was really impressed with how many hats she made and I always liked the fact that she did that. She just always wanted to give back to people.”

Lockard also said her mother loved to work in her flower garden, even though she couldn’t get out as often as she liked.

“Even though she couldn’t get out a lot, she had irises, roses and daylillies,” Lockard said. “She loved to work outside.”

Cox is survived by daughters Charlotte Koeppel, Shirley Duff and Charma Lockard, one son, Gene Cox, nine grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and one brother, Eugene Metzcar.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Breitenbach-McCoy-Leffler Funeral Home in Middletown with Michael Keeton officiating. The visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the service time.

Memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Butler and Warren counties.
