$1.5 million radar lab opening at UD

A new $1.5 million radar lab with the ability to detect an object 400 times smaller than a human hair will be dedicated next week at the University of Dayton School of Engineering.

Researchers at the Mumma Radar Laboratory will use radar to improve sensing for medical imaging and manufacturing, including the detection of defects in 3-D printed objects and for use in environmental and autonomous applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles, according to a university statement.

According to the university, the radars may be among the most accurate in the world, able to measure one-tenth of a micron, or 400 times smaller than a human hair.

The lab will be dedicated Tuesday in the Kettering Laboratories on the UD campus.

The Ohio Third Frontier Ohio Research Scholars Program contributed the money for the lab.
