The UNIFAT (Upper Nile Institute for Appropriate Technology) School is a refuge for children in this war-torn area of the African nation.
The school strives to spare as many children as possible from kidnapping, violence and other atrocities that are occurring as a result of the country’s 30-year civil war.
Mount Notre Dame’s chapter of U4U supports four children at the school.
Each year, members of the organization develop a marketing and public relations strategy to ensure its chapter raises enough money to underwrite the expenses of Etap Lucky, Latel Fiona, Layet Janet and Oruni Isaiah — MND’s students at the Ugandan school.
The group is pleased to be able to add two additional students to that list.
One of those students will be attending the school thanks to the generosity of an MND Senior Homeroom. MND physics teacher Wayne Peppercorn challenged his homeroom to raise the $300 necessary to underwrite an entire year’s tuition, uniform fee and lunch program.
“This concert is a fun way to raise money for our kids,” said junior Ellie Sennett of Liberty Twp., who is the Chapter’s Marketing and Public Relations Chair. “We’ve been working hard to put on a great show at the end of our U4U Awareness Week. Even if you’re just coming to see a friend perform or to hear great music, know that you are helping amazing kids get a chance at a better life.”
Larry Mock, Mount Notre Dame’s Head of School, is extremely proud of the results MND’s U4U Chapter is achieving.
“The young women of MND identify a truly important need and they create a solution that directly meets that need,” Mock said. “They understand the social context of their work, whether it is here in Cincinnati or across the globe in Uganda. Their work develops important leadership skills while at the same time it positively impacts others in a very important and personal way. I am truly impressed by the depth of passion they have for others and how much they grow through their service.”
