The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office is sending out a warning to residents to be cautious of phone call scams.

The office has received complaints from residents that they’re receiving phone calls from alleged sheriff’s office employees stating they have a warrant out for their arrest, a missed court date or unpaid fines.

Another common scam targets the elderly, the release stated. The caller claims to be a family member in jail, hospitalized or has an urgent debt that must be paid.

Callers then ask residents to provide credit card information over the phone or to purchase a gift card to various stores for payment.

“Unfortunately, scammers will try anything to mislead and harm innocent people, Sheriff Rob Streck said. “These scams are not new and continues to evolve as scammers change their tactics to remain successful.”

The sheriff’s office will never call residents and threaten arrest for unpaid fines, warrants or missed court dates.

If anyone receives an unsolicited call, hang up and report it to your local police department.
