Nyla’s Flowers closes Friday after almost 30 years

WEST CHESTER TWP. — Nyla Kramer fought back tears talking about what she’ll miss the most when she closes Nyla’s Flowers on Friday — the customers.

Kramer, 70, said it’s time to retire after 27 years. But by helping customers send their feelings with flowers through the years, Kramer has touched the lives of many area residents at key moments, such as proms, weddings and funerals.

“We’ve had a wonderful clientele,” Kramer said.

The longtime West Chester Twp. resident, now a Trenton resident, said she started working at the flower shop in Lakota Plaza. She liked it so much she was told she should buy it, so when the owner went looking to sell, that’s what she did. About 22 years ago, it moved to its current spot, 8880 Cincinnati Dayton Road.

Running a flower shop takes a lot of hours, including holidays and weekends.

“It makes you feel good. It makes them feel good,” Kramer said.

At one time she had three employees, but now employs one. The business has survived big-box stores and the recent recession with fresh quality products and service, said the grandmother of eight.

When she decided to retire three weeks ago, her husband and co-owner Sonny, 74, said he couldn’t believe it. But one of the delivery vans broke down and Kramer said she wasn’t going into debt over it. And that was it — a sign.

A 50-percent off sale runs through Friday. In February as the store is cleaned out, there will also be a closing sale, she said.

The shop’s neighbor in Olde West Chester, Michael Jivoin, manager of Old Town Wicker Furniture, said Nyla’s had thousands of repeat customers. He was a customer when Nyla’s did the flowers for his wedding 15 years ago.

“They’re a family-run business, very customer service oriented. They’ve always treated their customers like family and I think the community recognized that,” Jivoin said.
