Oakwood boosters replacing school’s gym floor

The 85-year-old floor of Oakwood High School’s gymnasium, called The Pit, is being replaced this summer in a $94,000 project paid for entirely by the school’s athletic boosters.

The removal of the old floor began just before the end of the school year, according to Oakwood Schools Treasurer Kevin Philo. He said the project is on a tight timeline because of some concrete excavation work to meet its Aug. 1 goal.

The athletic boosters plan to sell engraved pieces of the old floor as a fundraiser.

Teacher moves

The Oakwood school board on June 14 approved a reduction in teaching staff for next school year, suspending the contracts of elementary teachers Katherine Herms (full-time) and Amy Fultz (half-time) and choosing not to replace a departing kindergarten teacher. Superintendent Mary Jo Scalzo cited a projected decline in enrollment as the reason for the reduction.

The district did hire replacements for other teachers, leaving the total reduction at 2.5 positions. Abbie Hartge was hired from Brookville High School to teach high school chemistry and physics, Jennifer Gabbard was hired from Miamisburg to teach high school art and Katherine Spotts was hired from Lakota schools to teach Spanish.

Other news

• Oakwood Junior High might switch from trimesters to semesters for the 2011-12 school year. Principal Dan Weckstein is leading a review of the move, which the school board would have to approve by November.
