Oakwood schools hire 2 more leaders

Oakwood City Schools will have a new technology coordinator and a new curriculum director for next school year, after the school board approved the hires last week.

Kimbe Lange, who has been principal of Kyle Elementary School in Troy for 10 years and elementary curriculum coordinator for Troy City Schools for one year, will be Oakwood’s director of curriculum, instruction and assessment. Matthew Sproat, who is a technology teacher at Euclid High School in suburban Cleveland, will be Oakwood’s technology coordinator.

The curriculum job had been split between Kim Kappler Hewitt and Kathy Bartalo the past two years. Kappler Hewitt has accepted a job as a college professor. Oakwood Superintendent Mary Jo Scalzo said Bartalo will come back in a part-time role for 2011-12, mentoring Lange and overseeing Lange School as it transitions to all-day kindergarten.

Then the following year, Kimbe Lange will add administration of Lange School to her curriculum job.

“What drew me here was (the schools’) reputation,” said Lange, who added that she’s been a teacher, principal, curriculum director and special education director at a variety of Miami County schools. “After I got my doctorate, I knew I wanted to do something else.”

Sproat will replace Bruce Saunders, who is resigning after three years as technology coordinator. Scalzo said the technology coordinator is involved in everything from curriculum to professional development and hardware maintenance to overseeing the district’s technology plan and technology budget.

“There’s always a shiny new thing out there, but a big part of my job is knowing what’s effective in helping the kids learn,” Sproat said. “What’s most important is improving how they learn and making it more efficient or more cost-effective.”
