$1 offer to buy school building is rejected

Village officials did not immediately respond to messages left for comment.

McClintock said the village likely couldn’t afford the maintenance costs of the circa 1919 building.

The district closed the school at the end of the school year to save money. Since then, McClintock has written to Phillipsburg, Clay Twp. and Montgomery County to see if any were interested in buying the building. Phillipsburg was the only one to express an interest.

With no interested buyer, McClintock said the building will be auctioned, along with the remaining contents.

In January after two contentious public hearings, the board voted unanimously to close the building. Closing the building was projected to save the district more than $500,000 annually after merging around 200 students with Union Elementary, six miles down Phillipsburg-Union Road.

Monday, McClintock said the annual savings is over $643,000.

Phillipsburg, with a declining enrollment, was the smallest of the district’s seven elementary schools. In addition, the building did not have sewer service, depending instead on a septic system.
