Members of the Tactical Crime Suppression Unit Investigative Unit responded to the Red Roof Inn on Byers Road, said Centerville Police Department Public Information Officer John Davis. They came after a signal 99 was issued, meaning an officer in distress.

The identity of the suspect and the Miamisburg officer who shot him are not being released, Davis said. The suspect is receiving treatment at a hospital for non-life threatening injuries, and Davis said authorities are not releasing where he was wounded.

Davis said he is meeting with Miamisburg Police Chief John Sedlak this morning and a news conference will likely be scheduled this afternoon.

INITIAL REPORT:

A Miamisburg police officer shot and wounded an armed robbery suspect at the Red Roof Inn when the suspect turned toward the officer during a foot pursuit and brandished a handgun.

The suspect, wanted by the Dearborn County (Indiana) Special Crimes Unit, had tracked the Dayton man to the hotel, said Officer John Davis, PIO for the Tactical Crime Suppression Unit Investigative Unit.

The suspect, identified only as white and from Dayton, surprised the Indiana officers who had asked officers from Miamisburg to apprehend the suspect safely, Davis said.

Officers began chasing the man, who was about to get into a vehicle when they saw him sometime after 6 p.m. The foot chase was continuing through the south end of the motel when the suspect, who was armed, stopped and turned toward the pursuing officers.

That's when the Miamisburg officer shot the man, Davis said.

The man shot by the officer suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to one of the officers at the scene.

Detectives have taken into custody a female who was with the suspect at the motel, Davis said. Detectives have not said whether the female is an accomplice.

The names of the suspect, the female and the officer who fired on the suspect are not being released just yet, Davis said. No other information -- including what the Dayton man is accused of doing in Indiana -- was released.

The Bureau of Criminal Investigation, operated by the state attorney general's office, is on scene. Miamisburg Police Department Internal Affairs also will be investigating the officer's use of force.
