UD plans $10 million renovation of old dorm

Founders Hall, built in 1954, will be updated starting next May.

DAYTON — The University of Dayton will begin a $10 million renovation of its oldest residence hall next May, part of a nearly decade-long campaign to improve living facilities on campus.

Founders Hall, built in 1954 at the center of campus, will be renovated over two summers. The project will add new restrooms, an accessible lobby, an elevator tower, central air conditioning to replace window units, fire suppression through the entire building, and new furniture and finishing, said Beth Keyes, UD’s vice president for facilities management. The number of beds will be unchanged.

“We started in 2003 renovating all our first- and second-year facilities and they’re all complete except for Founders,” Keyes said.

During that time, UD constructed Marianist Hall and ArtStreet. Other renovation projects have been Marycrest, Stuart, Virginia W. Kettering and the Campus South apartments.

The $25 million townhouse-style development at Brown and Caldwell streets will open its doors to 400 students in August, according to UD.

“We are building a strong learning-living environment for students,” said President Daniel J. Curran. “We continue to make major investments in both residential and academic facilities.”
