Playaway simple way to listen to books

I pride myself in being a wicked multi-tasker, so you can imagine my chagrin when I read about studies claiming that multitasking can reduce productivity by as much as 40 percent. If I were to do everything that needs to be done in a day one at a time, I think the day would need to be longer than 24 hours.

I finally found a study by researchers at McGill that validates what my gut has been telling me all along. Our brains have evolved and now have neurons that split into two “spotlights.” In short, our 2012 model brains can attend to more than one object at a time. And just in the nick of time if you ask me.

One of my favorite multi-tasking activities is to listen to books while doing other things. Washington-Centerville Public Library has a robust collection of books on CD, downloadable eBooks for your iPod or other mp3 player, as well as a handy little audio option called Playaway.

Playaway is a little techier than a book on CD, but less technologically intimidating that downloading a book to your mp3 player. About the size of a deck of cards, this little device is akin to an mp3 player that already has a book downloaded to it. No muss, no fuss. Simply plug some headphones into the Playaway and press play. You are off and running while listening to your audiobook. With only five buttons (play, pause, rewind, fast forward and volume) this little device couldn’t be easier.

So the next time you are faced with a weekend of chores looming large, brighten up the task by checking out a Playaway.
