Police: Motorcycle crash started with theft

UPDATE @ 10:19 p.m.

The motorcycle crash involving a sedan at Grange Hall Road at Colonel Glenn Hwy., which sent both drivers to area hospitals, occurred as the man on the bike sped away from a police officer after stealing cell phones from a nearby Meijer store, Beavercreek Sgt. David Darkow said.

The man on the bike, whose name and age have not been released, was not wearing a helmet when the bike collided with a Buick at about 9:10 p.m.

He was taken to Miami Valley Hospital and his condition is not known, Darkow said. The man driving the Buick suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Soin Medical Center. There was no information readily available about the driver of the car.

The man on the bike had taken cell phones from the store in the 3800 block of Colonel Glenn Hwy., Darkow said, and was being followed by a Beavercreek police officer -- without lights or siren -- when he hit the gas and went into the intersection at high speed.

The investigation of the accident will keep the intersection partially closed until further notice, Darkow said.
