Police seek park vandals

OAKWOOD — The Oakwood Public Safety Department is seeking the community’s help in identifying vandals who did some significant damage to the grounds and playground equipment at Orchardly Park.

The park, which reopened in July of 2008 after undergoing some renovations, is located at Delaine Avenue between Wonderly Avenue and Orchard Drive.

Oakwood Public Safety Capt. Randy Baldridge said via a media release that “the vandals used spray paint to write obscenities and symbols in the park. The city has incurred a significant expense and lost employee productivity in order to handle the cleanup.

The park was targeted for similar activity last year. It was designed to be accessible to children with physical challenges and most of the ground has been covered with smooth, rubber-like material for safety.

The public safety department is asking citizens to report any suspicious persons or activity in or around the park. Police have also stepped up patrols in the area.

Violators could face some felony and misdemeanor charges and the public safety department will prosecute anyone apprehended for causing the damage to the park.

Developer Henry Coleman gave the park, which was originally named Wonderly Park, to the city in 1928.

Anyone with information about those responsible for the vandalism, should call the Oakwood Public Safety Department at (937) 298-2122. Callers can remain anonymous.
