“Some ladies called us and said they were interested. We’ve had quite a response,” said Hamilton police Detective Daniel Stevenson.
The current class has around 30 women, up from the typical five to 10 in a co-educational class.
“The ladies told us they felt a little more comfortable in an all-ladies setting. We were just trying to take care of these ladies.”
The single-sex classroom has made it easier to ask questions, said Christen Rednour, 34, of Ross Twp., a member of the second women-only class.
Classmate Shannon Walker, from Cincinnati, agreed.
“I feel like when a lot of women get together it’s more of a relaxed atmosphere,” said Walker, also 34. “It’s a tense subject, but we can talk about it and learn.”
The class provides the 12 hours of training required to get a permit, Stevenson said, and covers basic gun safety, laws concerning concealed-carry weapons, shooting fundamentals and weapon maintenance.
“It’s exactly the same class, same instructors, same curriculum” as the co-ed class, he said.
The next week of classes begins Aug. 4 at the Hamilton Police Department. For more information, visit www.hamilton-city.org.
