Prass Elementary School gets new principal

Valerie Dupler was the special ed coordinator at several Kettering schools.

KETTERING — When Valerie Dupler was a child, Jenny Zaidain was more than a little sister. She was Valerie’s best student.

“I made her play school all the time,” Dupler, 38, said of Jenny, who is now a nurse. “She had to do handwriting. I made her do math flash cards, do math problems. I read stories to her.”

Dupler’s childhood practice paid off. She pursued a career in education and was chosen by the Kettering City school board to be the new principal of J.E. Prass Elementary School, 2601 Parklawn Drive. She replaces Rich Bowden, who retired June 30.

“I think I am most looking forward to working with the students and the staff,” Dupler said. “It’s a great school.”

Dupler, 38, has been the principal of Moraine Meadows, 2600 Holman St., for one year.

“The staff here (Moraine Meadows) is phenomenal. This is a very supportive community. Great parents... We did a lot of learning, had a lot of fun.”

When asked what she learned as principal, Dupler said, “I think I more confirmed that when you put what the kids need first, things will work out.”

Dupler graduated from Chaminade Julienne High School in 1988. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Bowling Green University in 1992, and a master’s from the University of Dayton in 1995.

Prior to Moraine Meadows, she had been a special education coordinator for Kettering Middle School, Van Buren Middle School, Prass Elementary and Orchard Park Elementary.

Her husband, Norm, is a special education teacher at Kettering Fairmont High School. The couple have three sons.
