Prayer breakfast planned for Thursday

HAMILTON — The Butler County Commissioners’ prayer breakfast will be resurrected this year for the National Day of Prayer on Thursday, May 6, with a little help from a football Hall of Famer.

The prayer breakfast will be held at 7 a.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott hotel in Hamilton, formerly the Hamiltonian Hotel. Seating is limited.

This is the first prayer breakfast to be held since 2006, after which the hotel was renovated, said the Rev. John Lewis, pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Hamilton,.

Jade Kurlas will be providing music, and the keynote speaker will be Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Cincinnati Bengal Anthony Munoz.

“One of my elders is on his foundation,” Lewis said. “He’ll be talking about personal faith and prayer in his life, and probably some things about how the country needs all the prayer it can get.”

This year’s National Day of Prayer takes on an added significance because “I think people sense our nation is in desperate need of prayer. It starts at the grass roots level. We need to come together as a country. We set aside our denominational differences and just come together as believers,” Lewis said.

Last month, U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb said a National Day of Prayer violates the “establishment clause” of the First Amendment, which creates a separation of church and state. The Justice Department has filed a “Notice of Appeal” on the ruling.

The Hamilton event costs $20 per person to attend. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling the Presbyterian Church at (513) 867-5411, or by stopping at the church on 23 S. Front St.

That same day is a gathering from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at One Renaissance Center on High Street, hosted by the West Side Church of Christ at 1190 Stahlheber Road.

There will be an opportunity for people to submit anonymous prayer requests in a Prayer Box, and the church will be open for prayer from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. with a Prayer Box outside the church.
