President says Miami-Jacobs is prepared to defend program

DAYTON – Miami-Jacobs Career College President Darlene Waite said school officials are prepared to defend the school’s practical nursing program before the state nursing board in September.

“It is the goal of Miami-Jacobs Career College to be granted full approval status from the Ohio Board of Nursing to provide nursing education in Ohio,” Waite said in a written statement.

The nursing board Thursday moved for the second time in six months to withdraw conditional approval of the program after receiving a June site visit report that found more problems at the school.

After learning of the most recent recommendation Friday, July 30, nursing students said they believed the college was doing a good job training them.

“They have definitely taken steps to improve the program as a whole,” said Carla Antwi, a Springboro student. “I have strong faith in the program.”

In her statement, Waite said the college was working with the nursing board to address concerns and has never provided false information, has improved curriculum and is offering remediation to help students and conducted faculty training.

In September school officials will have a hearing to address the nursing board’s finding that Miami-Jacobs has used unqualified instructors, didn’t meet state curriculum standards and falsely reported replacing a nutrition instructor.

The college’s respiratory care program also is in question. The Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care moved to withdraw a letter of review for the program and deny approval that the college has appealed. Tom Smalling, commission executive director, said he is waiting contact with college attorneys before he can announce the outcome of the appeal.

Miami-Jacobs also is in the midst of arbitration with seven surgery technology students who said they were told the program they attended was accredited only to find out after graduation it wasn’t.
