"They're all rescues," she said.
The Montgomery County Animal Resource Center set up a tent outside while they removed the animals from the home located in the 100 block of Laura Avenue between Newport and Theodore avenues.
Officers said the removal followed complaints about the dogs and concerns about possible animal cruelty.
Hughes said she believes officers "skipped some steps." She said during the removal they wouldn't show her a copy of a search warrant for the home she rents.
She said her landlord won't fix anything in the home, and that some of her animals have health issues. An old hound can't control his bowels, she said, so she prefers to clean up his mess rather than let him sit in it inside a cage. Also, the great Dane is suffering from cancer but, Hughes said the dog still has good days so she doesn't want to euthanize her just yet.
Hughes said she was especially upset about the removal of a collie mix, the dog she's had the longest.
"He's the love of my life on four legs," she said. "He's never left my side in seven years."
The dogs were taken to the ARC facility, where they will be examined.
Officers said they would consult with the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office about filing any charges.
