Rally urges return to school in fall without restrictions

A small group of demonstrators gathered Saturday morning in Xenia outside the Greene County Courthouse to rally for reopening of Ohio schools in the fall without restrictions.

The Free Ohio and Schools NOW rally called for concerned parents, school staff and community members to gather in support of returning to school in the fall under normal classroom conditions.

Four people attended the rally in Xenia. It was part of a group of peaceful rallies in 20 counties across the state.

State superintendent Paolo DeMaria has said an updated version of Ohio’s fall restart guide for K-12 schools is expected in the next two weeks, but new proposed legislation also is likely to affect parts of the process.

DeMaria said a return to school five months after coronavirus-related shutdowns will require balancing four components — any changes in law from the legislature, health and safety guidelines from the Ohio Department of Health, resource information from the Ohio Department of Education and local decisions by schools and districts.
