The programs are free and open to the public. However, registration is required by calling (513) 539-7290, she said.
Reading Buddies and Homework Helpers are available for children in kindergarten through sixth grade and 7-12 grade from 5 to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays.
“The Reading Buddies program for the elementary students we have adult volunteers who will read with the students and do reading skills, and building activities,” she said.
“For the seventh grade through 12th grade students with Homework Helpers, we just kind of have a supervised and quiet area for them to be able to work on homework, and we have some adults available who can help them. It’s not necessarily one-on-one tutoring, but just adults available to help with homework.”
The programs are open to any student who needs assistance or could use some skills building or just needs a quiet place to work on their homework, Henson said.
She said the church decided to offer the programs after conducting a brainstorming session.
“Basically, we just wanted to start some programs that would help the community more, and that would not be regulated just to religious activities. As we were brainstorming ways to be involved in the community and be of assistance in the community this was one of the ideas that came up,” Henson said.
She said most of the volunteers helping out with the programs are retired teachers from the Greater Cincinnati area such Lakota and Monroe Schools.
The church plans to offer the programs throughout the school year as long as its get registrants, she said.
