Most of America may have fallen deeply in love with Doris Roberts when she starred as Ray Romano’s mom on the hit sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond."

Dayton fell for her long before that.

Roberts died Sunday at age 90.

She played hairdresser Loretta on the short-lived sitcom "Maggie," which was created by Dayton-born author Erma Bombeck.

'Member that?

The ABC show was based on Dayton girl Erma Bombeck's books and set here. Bombeck created and was executive director of the show, which aired from Oct. 24, 1981, to May 21, 1982.

The sitcom was about an ordinary family from Dayton, Bombeck's hometown. Miriam Flynn starred as  Maggie, a Dayton housewife. Roberts played Loretta, Maggie's gal pal.

Bombeck, a 1949 University of Dayton graduate, wrote a syndicated newspaper column that was carried by 700 newspapers.

The 2016 Workshop Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop was recently held at the university.

Bombeck was disappointed when Maggie was cancelled, according to a 2003 Dayton Daily News article by retired reporter Bob Batz.

"Maggie was her one and only sitcom, whereas the other Maggie writers would just go on to work on some other series," Tim Bete, humor columnist and curator of the museum (www.ErmaMuseum.org), said then.
