Renovated skating rink gets thumbs-up at open house

Skatetown facility under new management.

TRENTON — Roller skating is making a return to Trenton.

Skatetown USA, located in the old Skateway Trenton building at 100 Sal Blvd., will hold its grand opening from 8 to 11 p.m. Friday.

Owners have done a major renovation of the building since May and said they are ready to get things going.

“It had been rundown to a state of disrepair,” said Sam Nelson, who purchased the building in 1985. “It wasn’t a clean, family place anymore, but we’ve redone everything.”

Nelson said the business was leased to another party and operated as Skateway Trenton for 20 years, but was closed last year.

Nelson partnered with Ken Roesel, who operates Skatetown USA in West Chester Twp., to get the rink operational.

“It was in pretty bad shape,” said Roesel, who will operate the Trenton facility with his brother Mike. “It has been a lot of work, but I know there was a need for it and we’re proud of what we’ve done.

“I’m excited to get it going,” he added. “We really want this to be a place where the whole family can come and enjoy the fun.”

Trenton resident Rebecca Lewis, whose son is one of the rink’s employees, was enjoying herself during the open house Tuesday night.

She said she had not been roller skating in quite a few years.

“I had fun out there,” Lewis said after coming off the floor. “It came back quicker than I thought it would.

“I can’t believe what they have done here. It’s really beautiful,” she added.

“From the last time I remember coming here, this is a much safer place than it was then. It is so well lit,” Lewis said. “I’m glad to see it reopening. I can’t wait to bring my whole family here.”

Skatetown USA will have regular session hours on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, and a family skate on Wednesdays.

It also will be available for birthday parties and other private events.
