Several Piqua businesses have been evacuated as crews investigate a natural gas leak.

The leak was reported around 1:30 p.m. near the intersection of Looney Road and U.S. 36. Construction crews reportedly ruptured the gas line where a new $30 million Kettering Health Network health care center is planned.

Piqua Fire Chief Brent Pohlschneider said six businesses have been evacuated, including the Piqua Board of Eduation, the Social Security Administrative Office and a dental office. Strong winds from the southwest created a cause of concern for drifting gas, he said.

He said as of 3 p.m., gas had been shut off and was below explosive limits, he said.
No homes have been evacuated at this time.
