Robber threatens elderly woman, steals money from Bible

A Greenville resident was arrested for aggravated robbery after allegedly threatening an elderly woman with a weapon while demanding cash, police said.

Randy Hofacker, 53, is incarcerated at the Mercer County Jail on a first-degree felony complaint stemming from an incident that occurred Saturday.

At 11 p.m., police responded to a report of a burglary on the 600 block of E. Fourth St. in Greenville.

A 90-year-old woman said a male suspect had scammed her out of money twice in recent weeks. She said on Saturday he asked to use her restroom, but she refused.

Hofacker gained entry to the home by  claiming he had her money and wanted to return it.

But once inside, the  suspect grabbed a weapon in the home and threatened the woman’s life, demanding $40 from her, police said. The woman was able to escape and call out for help.

The suspect took $2 she had tucked inside her Bible before fleeing.

The women knew the man under a false name. But police identified Hofacker as a suspect and arrested him on Aug. 4. The Darke County Prosecutor’s office has issued an aggravated robbery complaint against Hofacker, which was filed with the county common pleas court.
