Roller skating rink correcting violations

A longtime Fairborn roller skating rink will remain open after rectifying 29 of 42 state fire code violations, including obtaining an occupancy permit.

“I would not have opened without the blessing of the fire departments and the fire marshals and the building people,” said Erica Collins, acting owner of Skyborn Skateland, 5309 Haddix Road. “We’ve corrected the majority of those violations and we’re permitted, now with a temporary occupancy permit to be open.”

Al Kuzma, director of the Greene County Department of Building Regulation, confirmed the business obtained the temporary occupancy permit following an inspection Friday by his department in conjunction with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Fairborn Fire Department.

“Skyborn Skateland has received a certificate of occupancy — temporary time limited for 30 days as a result of my inspection,” Kuzma said. “They have a copy of my inspection report and a copy of the certificate.”

The business was under scrutiny from the fire marshal’s office after inspectors found 42 state fire code violations Wednesday ranging from inappropriate use of extension cords to exit doors being blocked by snowbanks.

“This was definitely the most thorough fire inspection that a business can go through and absolutely brought things to our attention that we were more than happy to correct,” said Collins, who’s operated the business the last four years. “It concerns me that in previous inspections this was never brought to anyone’s attention.”

Fairborn fire officials said they inspected the business previously around two years ago. This newspaper requested a copy of that inspection, but has not received it yet.

Fairborn Operations Chief David Reichert said the business has been cooperative throughout the entire process.

“Remarkable improvements. There’s been a lot of violations that have been corrected,” Reichert said.

The business has until Wednesday of this week to correct the remaining 13 violations, the fire marshal’s office said.
