Safety concerns raised about bus stop at The Greene

UPDATE @ 8:51 p.m.: Beavercreek City Council members have concerns about safety in adding a bus stop at The Greene Town Center.

Mayor Bob Stone on Monday night said he is worried about large buses attempting to navigate narrow streets inside the shopping center.

“I think it is our issue from a safety standpoint,” Stone said during the council’s work session. “To pull a full-size bus inside those small streets, I think it absolutely is (our issue).”

Stone and other council members noted the city owns the streets within The Greene.

The discussion about the proposed bus stop, which would be located near Rave Cinemas close to the intersections of Chestnut and Beech streets, comes about six months after the council delayed the vote on the issue following a Greater Dayton RTA request for an extension.

EARLIER REPORT

GDRTA officials are still working with a property owner to get a needed right of way so it can move forward with a proposed bus stop on Chestnut Street in The Greene Town Center, according to Beavercreek documents.

Beavercreek city staff will give council an update tonight on the RTA application to install a bus stop in a retail center. If approved, the bus stop would be the first one in The Greene.

“The City has offered GDRTA the opportunity for a conditional approval pending their procurement of the ROW (right of way) and a settlement with the property owner in regards to the meter pit located on Beech and Chestnut,” said city Public Administrative Services Director Mike Thonnerieux in a recent memo to City Manager Mike Cornell.

RTA and city have discussed options for alternative stops and locations, however, there are no “other viable locations” being considered at this time, Thonnerieux wrote.
