Saturday implosion

A 12-story Schwind Building , known to many for the former Moraine Embassy Restaurant that occupied the ground floor, will be imploded at 7:15 a.m. Saturday with explosives to fall on itself and a portion of the vacated Dayton Daily News offices and printing plant at 37 S. Ludlow St. Here’s how the implosion will work: About 50 pounds of dynamite will be used in the implosion, with charges placed on the first and second floors as well as the fifth and eighth floors in the building on the right. The building has already been mostly gutted. The building’s support pillars will be linked with cables on the third, sixth and ninth floors to make sure the building falls correctly. At 7:05 a.m., a siren will be activated - the 10 minute warning. There will be a four-minute warning, then a final 10-second countdown, followed by the detonation and the sound and rumble of the collapse will be about the equivalent of a 20-ton dump truck going over a speed bump. The site is being cleared for a 200-apartment development by Student Suites Inc. The historic 1908 newspaper building at the corner of Fourth and Ludlow streets, designed by Gov. James M. Cox to be in the style of a bank, will not be demolished and will be incorporated into the new construction.
