Scarff’s Nursery donates work on Veterans Memorial Park

Company does it to honor military and salute one of its own

TIPP CITY — Scarff’s Nursery workers have taken a liking to the grounds they created at the Veterans Memorial Park, donating maintenance, in part, as a salute to veterans and a former coworker serving in Afghanistan.

Tuesday mornings usually will find a Scarff’s crew at the park at Main and Hyatt streets, mowing, fertilizing and handling weed control.

Bill Duff of Scarff’s said the donation is a way for the company to give back to the community, as well as being smart business.

“This is to honor our veterans ... a way to give back a little bit to our veterans,” Duff said.

One current member of the military also is on their minds.

He is 1st Lt. Matt Burton of Casstown, the son of a Scarff’s employee and former summer help for the crews. Burton now is with the Army Rangers in Afghanistan.

Scarff’s Nursery Inc. is located on North Dayton-Lakeview Road in New Carlisle. The company placed the landscaping, plants, sod and mulch when the less than one-acre park was built in 2008. The company mowed and maintained the park at no cost during its first year.

Last year, the city did not contract with the company for care due to budget cuts. A mowing company was paid to mow while city park workers handled tasks such as fertilizing, weed control, pruning, mulch and general maintenance. Volunteers did some weeding and trimming.

This year, Scarff’s offered to donate the maintenance, valued at around $1,500, City Engineer Scott Vagedes said.

The city acknowledged the donation, but could not allow the company to place one of its signs in the park because of local sign code regulations.

“The city appreciates them donating their time to keep Veterans Memorial Park looking fine,” Vagedes said. “I am glad they are doing it.”

Duff said being seen in the park is good advertising for the company. When he mentions the company is involved with the park, people know what park he is referencing, he said of the park seen as an entryway to the city’s historic downtown.

“It is a real sparkle there heading into Tipp City,” Duff said.
