Scooter shopper struck in Kroger parking lot

Grocery store customers must operate motorized scooters provided by numerous area stores with care, police say.

On Monday, officers responded to parking lot of the Kroger store located at 1024 S. Smithville Road after getting a report of a vehicle crash with injuries. Upon arrival, it was discovered that a man was driving the scooter in the parking lot when a red Jeep backed into him. The victim told officers he was in the middle of the parking lot at the time.

No citations were handed out, according to a police report obtained Wednesday.

The scooter is not a licensed motor vehicle and is intended to be driven in the store only, police said. The driver of the Jeep stated she looked in her rearview mirror and did not see the victim. She said she was not going more than a couple miles per hour at the time.

There was no damage to the scooter or the Jeep, police said.

"The scooter rides so low it would be impossible for (the driver of the Jeep) to see it in her mirrors," the report stated.

The victim was said not to be injured.
