Section of pavement removed by work crews causes damage to multiple vehicles in Dayton

UPDATE @ 10:30 a.m.: 

Maintenance crews have made temporary repairs to a large hole on North Main Street in Dayton after several drivers reported damage to their vehicles.

Around 10 a.m., crews refilled the hole with gravel and have placed a large steel plate over it.

Earlier this morning, several vehicles were either damaged or had blown tires after the section of pavement opened up.

According to work crews on the scene, the section of pavement was previously cut out and removed by Vectren workers and filled with gravel.

It was not known when a more permanent repair would be made to the road.

FIRST REPORT

Several drivers have reported damage to their vehicles caused by a large hole on North Main Street in Dayton.

Callers into this newsroom reported at least eight vehicles suffered blown tires or vehicle damage caused by the large hole in the northbound lanes of North Main Street near Knecht Drive Friday morning.

Work crews on the scene said the hole was not a pothole, and a section of roadway was previously removed by Vectren crews conducting maintenance.

The exact number of vehicles damaged by the hole was not immediately known.

Vectren crews arrived on the scene before 9:15 a.m. to begin making additional repairs. The right lane of northbound North Main Street will be blocked until the hole is repaired.
