Although the coronavirus has disrupted many Ohioan’s spring and summer travel plans, the Ohio Department of Transportation is still working to improve roads people travel on in the Miami Valley.

The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is doing around 1,000 projects across the state this year, said ODOT’s Press Secretary Matt Bruning. The overwhelming majority, about 90%, of those projects are maintenance projects.

The exact number of projects that will get finished this spring and summer is uncertain because of the coronavirus.

“Construction is essential, especially to get the economy back up and running and get supplies across the state on our highways,” Bruning said.

Locally, ODOT is working on more than 30 projects in the Miami Valley, according to local ODOT spokeswoman Mandi Dillon.

Travel and traffic on Ohio roadways are down right now and Dillon said it is uncertain how much the state will collect from the gas tax because of this change.

“Certainly, with significantly fewer people driving, it’s safe to say there will be an impact to ODOT’s funding source, the motor vehicle fuel tax, down the road,” Dillon said. “That will affect our projects, however, it’s too early to know what that impact will look like.”

Dillon also said ODOT, like many work places around the country right now, has seen some ODOT employees or the employees of some of their contractors who have been unable to report to work due to quarantine orders or caring for children.

In Montgomery County, ODOT is working on a nearly $4 million asphalt resurfacing project on Interstate 75 from the Montgomery County/Warren County line to the Ohio 725 Interchange. The project is scheduled to be completed this month.

Also on I-75 in Dayton, ODOT is currently replacing the bridge from U.S. 35 to the southbound lanes of I-75. This is a $5.2 million project and will be finished on Aug. 2021.

Improvements are also being made to the interchange on Ohio 49 from Interstate 70 to U.S. 40. This project will cost $4.5 million and is scheduled to be finished in June.

ODOT is also improving the interchange on U.S. 35 at Smithville Road for $5.1 million. This project will be complete in May.

After that project is complete ODOT will be widening U.S. 35 to three lanes from the Smithville Road interchange to the Montgomery County and Greene County line. This will be a $13.4 million project and is estimated to take just over two years to complete.

ODOT will also work on various lighting maintenance projects across Montgomery County.

In Xenia, ODOT plans to finish an improvement project at the intersection of U.S. 42 and East Church. It will have cost nearly $1 million.

ODOT will continue to work on the construction of a $14.9 million super street on U.S. 35 between Orchard Lane and Factory Road in Beavercreek. The project includes road and bridge improvements and adding traffic signals at both intersections.

In Clark County, ODOT is working on a $43 million project on Interstate 70, in which they’re adding a lane from on the stretch of highway from U.S. 68 to State Route 72. The project started in 2018 and is scheduled to be finished in September 2021.

ODOT is also working on a $3.6 million asphalt resurfacing project on the northbound lanes of Interstate 70 from State Route to the Clark County and Madison County line.

Construction on Interstate 75 in Miami County is scheduled to be completed this summer. ODOT is making improvements to the bridge between exit 78 and the rest area. The project will cost about $10.3 million.

“We’re still working,” Bruning said. “We’re still doing hundreds of projects around the state to make our roads better.”
